Roller Shutters

Roller shutters that protect your store, and your brand

Roller shutters are the most widely specified physical security for UK shopfronts, warehouses and service openings, combining forced-entry resistance with controlled access. We manufacture and install shutters in galvanised steel or aluminium, from single-skin security curtains to insulated double-skin and vision options that keep window displays on show after closing. Every shutter is built to the relevant standards and supplied with the operation, controls and safety devices suited to its duty and location.

Options

Your options

Security Roller Shutters

Robust galvanised steel or aluminium curtains engineered for forced-entry resistance and out-of-hours protection, single-skin, insulated double-skin or punched/perforated laths. Choose these where deterrence, durability and an optional tested rating such as LPS 1175 are the priority.

Polycarbonate Roller Shutters

Shutters built with clear, near-unbreakable polycarbonate laths that secure the opening while keeping a largely transparent view of the display. Choose these for boutiques, showrooms and shopping-centre units where keeping stock visible and lit after hours drives footfall.

Why it matters

Why retailers choose Swift for roller shutters

Forced-entry deterrence

A physical steel or aluminium barrier deters attack, and can be specified to independently tested LPS 1175 resistance levels where insurers or risk require it.

Retail display kept visible

Perforated, punched, glazed or polycarbonate curtains secure the shop yet let passers-by see lit displays, so the frontage keeps selling around the clock.

Insulation & weather protection

Insulated double-skin laths reduce heat loss, condensation and noise, useful for chilled storage, cafés and street-facing openings.

Controlled, low-effort operation

Electric operation with key-switch, remote, timer or smart control makes opening fast and repeatable, with manual override retained for power loss.

Built to recognised standards

Powered shutters can be UKCA / CE marked to BS EN 13241 with a Declaration of Performance, and made safe in use to BS EN 12453.

Long service life

Galvanised and powder-coated finishes resist corrosion; planned maintenance keeps the curtain, barrel and motor running reliably for years.

Standards

Specified & tested to recognised standards

We can specify and test products to the relevant British and European standards for your project.

BS EN 13241 Product standard for industrial and commercial doors, the basis for UKCA / CE marking and Declaration of Performance.
BS EN 12453 Safety in use of power-operated doors, safety edges, sensors and control modes (hold-to-run vs automatic).
BS EN 12604 / 12605 Mechanical aspects of doors, requirements and test methods (e.g. anti-drop, counterbalance).
LPS 1175 (LPCB) Loss Prevention Standard grading forced-entry resistance by Security Rating (SR1–SR5) for insurers and specifiers.
Secured by Design UK police-preferred scheme, achievable where a shutter meets the required tested standard.
BS EN 16034 Fire-resisting performance, applies only to certified fire shutters (E/EI), not standard security shutters.
DHF TS 013 / BS 7036 Door & Hardware Federation code of practice for powered doors, installation, safety devices and maintenance.
FAQs

Common questions

Should I choose manual or electric operation?

Manual (spring push-up or geared hand-chain) suits smaller openings, low daily use and sites without a convenient power supply, and costs less. Electric operation is recommended for large or heavy curtains, frequent daily cycles, and staff convenience; it adds key-switch, remote, timer and smart control, and always retains a manual emergency override for power cuts.

Can a roller shutter keep my window display visible?

Yes. Perforated and punched steel/aluminium curtains secure the opening while leaving an open pattern for a see-through effect, and polycarbonate/glazed shutters give near-clear visibility. These are ideal where you want the display lit and shopping-able after hours.

What security rating do I need?

For most retail, standard commercial security is sufficient, but higher-risk sites (jewellers, pharmacies, electronics) or insurer requirements often call for an independently tested LPS 1175 rating: SR2 is common for retail, with SR3+ for high-value stock. We survey the risk and specify accordingly.

Are your security shutters fire shutters?

No. A standard security shutter is not a fire barrier. Only shutters specifically tested and certified to BS EN 16034 provide rated fire resistance. If your building’s fire strategy needs a compartment shutter, that is a distinct certified product we can specify separately.

Are powered shutters safe for staff and the public?

When specified to BS EN 12453 they include safety features such as a sensitive bottom edge, photocells for obstacle detection and an anti-drop safety brake. Operating mode and safety devices are chosen to match where people can reach the shutter, and are maintained under DHF / BS 7036 guidance.
